#MetGala2018: Heavenly Bodies

Besides Christmas and Halloween, the Met Gala is one of my favourite times of the year. I love seeing celebrities and designers come together to create a work of wearable art to be showcased at the Met Gala. If you’d like to learn more about this year’s exhibition, click here.

What is the Met Gala?

Every year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a gala to mark the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Many high-profile celebrities attend this event and the itinerary for the night is usually under lock and key.

For this night, celebs are paired with a designer that will create a custom look that represents the theme of the event. Celebrities are given the chance to showcase their costumes for the night by walking the stairs up the Met.

I’m always in awe of the costumes that are created. My favourite pieces are the ones designed with the theme in mind. Designers and celebrities that go above and beyond to create costumes that combine fashion and the theme are my favourite. Obviously the meaning behind the design is what I’m intrigued by. Without further ado, here are seven of my favourite looks from this year’s Met Gala – Heavenly Bodies:

  1. Zendaya

The spot for number one was a close call between Zendaya and Rihanna. I chose Zendaya because of the strength Joan of Arc (the style inspiration behind her look) embodies. She fought during a time when women hold little to no value. And because of her efforts, she became a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. I have always admired Joan of Arc’s legacy and I thought it was a great move by Zendaya and Versace to create a look in her honour.

  2. Rihanna

If you know me, you know that I would raid Riri’s closet in a heartbeat. Which is why she’s number two. The intricate detail of this hand-sewn outfit leaves me breathless. Rihanna never disappoints on the Met Gala stairs and she really brought her A-game this year. It makes so much sense that she chose to emulate The Pope because…well she is OUR leader.Costume: John Galliano

    Clutch: Judith Leiber
  3. Blake Lively

Another one of my all-time fashion favourites. Blake has really become a name for high-fashion since the days of Gossip Girl. This Versace gown looks so angelic to me and reminds me of a Christmas angel on top of an elegantly decorated Christmas tree. I loved everything about it and the hairpiece was the cherry on top for me. ALSO, her clutch was INSANELY ADORABLE (skip to the last photo of her slideshow to check it out). The initials of her family and the “Reynolds” on the bottom.

  4. Chadwick Boseman

It’s always refreshing to see a man KILL it at the Met Gala. As mentioned, I’m all for attendees that stick to the theme and Chadwick did not disappoint. The detail of the golden crosses, his pants, AND THOSE SHOES. This was definitely a win for Mr. Boseman.

  5. Ariana Grande

This was Ariana’s first Met Gala and she stepped up to the occasion. She embodied Michelangelo’s ceiling painting in the Sistine Chapel, literally. This Vera Wang gown was beautifully designed with flowing material that made her look angelic.

  6. Emilia Clarke

Die-hard Game of Thrones fan. Emilia Clarke presented herself as every queen should. In head-to-toe Dolce and Gabbana, Emilia looked like a Renaissance goddess in this piece. My favourite part of this entire look was her golden crown with the floral arrangement. It was perfect.

  7. Kate Bosworth

Kate Bosworth stunned as she walked the carpet. Her entire look presented innocence and purity. With the white veil and pearl embellishments, she was one of the stars that took this theme quite literally and rocked it. I love everything about this look.

Yet another Met Gala (that I haven’t attended) has come and gone. I’m so excited to see what 2019 has in store!
